The problem with the class struggle in the United Kingdom is that workers are not convinced that such a thing as the class struggle actually exists! However, that may be about to change. The UK is in the middle of the gravest economic and financial crisis since the 1930s. UK workers are told “we” have a £156bn fiscal deficit; “we” have a public sector debt of £771. Teachers in Florida, like teachers everywhere, are confronting an ugly set of circumstances. Many Florida teachers are working without a contract. They have had to forgo scheduled pay raises, and many were surplussed at the end of the school year and are faced with the uncertainty of a new assignment or a possible layoff. Administrators have told teachers that if they are contemplating early retirement or a leave of absence, now would be a good time to take it, because it would save someone’s job.
